Shape first, feature second

The guessers do not need to recognise a horse; they need to recognise 'four-legged animal' and then the one detail that makes it a horse rather than a cow. Draw the body and legs in two strokes, then the mane. Let the chat narrow it — when three people have typed 'cow' you know exactly which feature to add next.

Arrows are legal

An arrow pointing at part of the drawing is the strongest tool in the game. A person with an arrow to the nose is 'nose'; the same person with an arrow to the shoe is 'shoe'. The game's own rules say no spelling, and players who write letters or numbers tend to get votekicked, but arrows, plus signs and equals signs are fair.

Compound words and phrases

Split them. 'Sunflower' is a sun, a plus sign and a flower. 'Firefighter' is flames and a stick figure with a hose. The room reads the equation faster than any single picture.

The three-word choice

Take the concrete noun. Objects and animals are the quick wins; abstract words — 'jealousy', 'tomorrow' — cost most artists the whole turn. If all three are hard, pick the shortest: fewer letters means the hints reveal a bigger fraction of the word.

Use the fill bucket for backgrounds

The toolbar has a brush (hotkey B), a fill bucket (F), undo (U) and clear (C), 26 colours and five brush sizes; the mouse wheel changes the size too.

Blue fill plus a yellow circle is 'beach' or 'sky' in two clicks. Fill is also the fastest way to make a big object read as a colour: a green fill of the whole canvas with a black outline is 'grass' or 'field' before the outline is finished.

Stop drawing when they are close

Once the chat is circling the right answer, add the smallest possible detail and wait. Piling on more strokes muddies the picture and often pushes guessers away from the answer they nearly had.
